Scramble (2v2)

Both partners hit every shot, you pick the better ball, and you both play again from that spot. The format that makes a bad golfer feel useful and a good golfer feel invincible.

How it plays

  1. 1Both players on the team tee off.
  2. 2The team picks the better of the two shots and marks the spot.
  3. 3Both players play their next shot from within a clublength of that mark, no nearer the hole.
  4. 4Repeat all the way into the cup — including putts.
  5. 5One score per team per hole. Lowest team total over nine wins.

Scoring and handicaps

  • One card per team. Scramble scores run low — 4 or 5 under par for nine holes is normal for a strong pair.
  • Handicap allocation for a two-man scramble is commonly 35% of the low handicap plus 15% of the high.
  • In the league, team weeks pay 8 points to each winner and 3 to each loser.
  • Partners rotate every team week so no permanent alliances form.

Over nine holes

Scramble is the fastest, friendliest format in the rotation and the one that films best — two players standing over the same putt with the hole on the line is a shot you cannot get in an individual format.

How to actually win it

  • Order matters: let the steadier player hit first off the tee so the aggressive player can swing freely.
  • On the green, the worse putter putts first — a free read for the partner who can hole it.
  • Take the aggressive line on every approach. There is no downside when your partner has already found the middle of the green.

What are the rules of a golf scramble?
